Elsa Berger Smith was born in Schierling, Germany, a little town in Bavaria, on October 13, 1934. Part of her childhood was spent enduring the hardships of WWII. Years after the war, she met an American GI, Clifton B. Smith, Sr., who she married and was the love of her life.
They had four sons, one of which, Robert “Bobby” Smith, was killed in a tragic accident, while still a child. They were happily married for 60 years.
Throughout her life, she loved traveling, camping, fishing and working in her garden. One of their great adventures was when they converted their pontoon boat into a houseboat and took a trip down the Mississippi River with their best friends. They decided to cut the trip short when a tugboat almost sank them.
Besides being a wonderful homemaker, she worked at Beauregard Memorial Hospital for many years, as a nurse’s aide. She loved helping others. She attended Unity Baptist Church, where she was blessed with many wonderful, caring friends, who she considered family. Unfortunately, she lost her husband in 2013.
She is survived by many loved ones, here in the states, and in Germany.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 1 from 11am-1pm at Chaddick Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Thursday, August 1 at 1pm at Chaddick Funeral Home. Interment will be at Beauregard Cemetery. Rev. Michael Burkes will officiate.
